Your friends influence your thinking
Have you ever caught yourself saying a particular word or phrase and thought, “Wow! I sound just like so and so!” Well, the same thing applies to your entire thought process. When we surround ourselves with positive people, we pick up on their outlook and positive energy in life. Slowly but surely, you’ll learn from them how to balance the stressful and overwhelming parts of life with the joys. When you surround yourself with good people who make you happy, you’ll notice not only an improvement in your mood but also that you’ll make more joyful memories and your overall well-being improves.
How to make sure you find the right people
The first step to finding positive people is to put yourself out there. Go to events both inside and outside your comfort zone. Love art? Try an art class. Always wanted to learn a language but feel intimidated? Sign up for a class at your local college or community centre. In both cases, you can try striking up a conversation with one or two people. The only way to meet positive people is to go where they are. Once you start meeting people, you can start looking out for a few things. If you admire certain traits in general, then you will want your soon-to-be friends to have. If kindness is something you admire, then you will likely watch for that in potential friends. Does this person you’ve started talking to treat service staff well and give others the benefit of the doubt when they make a mistake. If so, it’s probably a good sign that they’re a positive person to be around.
It’s also important to keep track of how potential new friends make you feel. Suppose you look forward to meeting up for yoga or lunch and finish an activity feeling any combination of energized, happy, confident, or encouraged. In that case, you know you’re in the presence of a positive influence. On the other hand, if you find yourself dreading seeing a certain person or frequently walk away after a meetup feeling self-conscious, criticized, or guilty for something you said. It may be time to respectfully let this person know that you don’t feel the friendship is fulfilling anymore.
Most importantly, don’t forget to be patient. It can be challenging to find true friends, especially as we get older and settle into our routines. It may take a few tries; it’s normal to feel discouraged at some point.
Nevertheless, it will be worth it once you notice the changes in your mental health and general outlook on life that the right people inspire.
