Hilarapy Recovery Project

The Hilarapy Recovery Project (HRP) aims to tackle the ongoing opioid crisis and provide hope to those affected by addiction. Despite the daily loss of six people to overdose, there are thousands of people who have overcome addiction and are living fulfilling lives. The HRP aims to break down the shame and stigma that often comes with addiction and recovery.

Lizzie Allan, a comedian, therapist, and creator of Hilarapy, is leading the project by forming a troupe of Hilarapists. These Hilarapy-style comedians will be trained from the abstinence-based recovery community to perform their funny and uplifting stories of survival. These performances will take place in treatment centers, prisons, and stages across Vancouver and the lower mainland, spreading hope and changing people’s perceptions.

Are you a person in recovery from addiction? Have you thought about using your story to help others? If so, your story is the hope many need to hear. Have you ever seen a comedian who has dropped truth bombs and changed the way you see the world? You could do that too! To apply for the HRP, you must be a person from the abstinence-based recovery community. Once accepted onto the HRP, you must complete the Hilarapy Comedy Therapy Course with Lizzie Allan.

The HRP Course

Learn to harness the power of comedy and therapy to change the world.

Hilarapy™ is a ground-breaking type of comedy therapy designed to help relieve emotional pain and stress and improve confidence and feelings of well-being and joy.

Those selected will embark on a Ten-Week Hilarapy Course into a deeper, richer experience of self through the transformative power of authentic, vulnerable connection combined with play, creativity, and shadow work. This dynamic modality is a creative, empowering, process-oriented course revealing that happiness is a result rather than a goal.

Participants will:

  • challenge fears and limitations head-on in healthy ways
  • take ‘ownership’ of their story without need for sympathy or approval
  • write and perform a 5–7-minute comedy set with confidence and self-respect
  • join a loving, supportive community
  • discover tools to open to the inherent creative flow available to all
  • perform shows across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland
